We believe chemistry
can be the good guy.

Green Rose Chemistry helps innovative companies develop and adopt high-performing biobased chemicals—safe, sustainable products you can get excited about. Work with us and make the world thrive.

Our Story

Green Rose Chemistry was founded with one goal: solve real problems with cutting-edge green chemistry research.

Founder Anna Zhenova has deep roots in the world of academia, learning about chemistry at universities like Caltech, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and the University of York.

No matter what research lab she was in, she found herself impatient with the slow route to market for her work. She knew that if she applied green chemistry in industry, she could solve real, immediate problems around safety, health, and pollution.

Anna founded Green Rose Chemistry to create sustainable solutions to industrial problems, today.

What is green chemistry?

Green chemistry is a revolutionary new approach to chemical science, focusing on making chemicals that are safe, sustainable, and effective.

By redesigning for efficiency, safety, and circularity, green chemistry can reduce waste and stop accidents before they happen. It’s also a crucial part of the transition to a bioeconomy, discovering biobased options to replace petrochemicals.

Green chemistry isn’t easy, but it is essential for our future.

Anna Zhenova

Founder and CEO

Anna leads Green Rose Chemistry and works directly with clients to solve their green chemistry problems. During her Ph.D. at the University of York, she noticed the market need for high-quality, on-demand green chemistry research for industrial applications, and founded Green Rose Chemistry to meet it. Her speciality is solvents, polymers, and their interactions. Anna excels in translating academic expertise to real-world applications, and has a rather unscientific fondness for clear communication and polished graphics.

James Sherwood

Scientific Advisor

After receiving a Ph.D. in the applications of biobased solvents, James developed the S4 methodology for solvent selection at the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (University of York) in 2014. He was the first to demonstrate the use of Cyrene™ as a solvent, and continues to investigate safer solvents and sustainable polymers as a post-doctoral research associate at York.

Emma Lindsay

Commercial Strategy Advisor

Emma has held roles in Marketing, Innovation, and Strategy across the UK, Spain, and the USA for a leading FMCG business and, most recently, was an Associate Strategy Director at Anthesis, one of the world’s top sustainability consultancies. Emma brings deep expertise in brand and business strategy development and a commitment to helping impact-led businesses grow.

Tabitha Petchey

Senior Consultant

Tabitha obtained her Ph.D. at the University of York carrying out research into sustainable solvents. She has experience in multiple academic research projects at the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, including polymer recycling and waste valorisation. With a background in chemical emergency response, working with many clients across the chemical and transport industries, she brings an understanding of hazard classification and chemical regulation to her research at Green Rose Chemistry.

Mary Aiken-Wood

Associate Consultant

Mary obtained her MChem at the University of York, with a focus on green and sustainable chemistry. Since graduating, she has worked in formulation, quality control, and plastics, bringing elements of green chemistry to each of her roles.

Nicholas Olive

Associate Consultant

Nicholas holds a BE with honours in Chemical and Process Engineering and a MSc in Chemistry, focused on the scaling of nanomaterial synthesis. Nicholas has worked across a wide range of industries and provides context and insight into the commercialisation of new technologies. He specialises in process economics and engineering for early-stage chemical technologies.

Our Values

Green Rose is an independent consultancy – we sell science, not products. We look at the data, look at your needs, and expertly determine the best route to solve your problem. If there is no solution out there that suits all your needs, we will tell you so, and work with you to identify the best alternative. We understand what the data says, where the gaps are, and how to make the right green choice.

We believe in a bright green future, with chemistry playing a crucial role in enabling clean, sustainable innovation and high quality of life around the world. Our reason for being is to bring that future closer.

We recognise that getting to a bright green future takes a series of small steps. Every step towards safe, sustainable chemistry should be celebrated, and we will work with you whether your goal is to adopt a renewable, low-carbon, locally-manufactured surfactant, or to replace your hazardous solvent with an affordable, safer option.

Academic jargon is overrated. We work hard to communicate clearly, conveying the core results of our research to anybody who wants to understand. You won’t need a Ph.D. in chemistry to get it.

We want to use business as a force for good, embracing the triple bottom line of people, planet, and prosperity. Sustainability is entangled with issues of social and economic justice, and we take seriously our responsibility to address all three. We aim for equality, diversity, and inclusion in hiring and company practices, using research-based practices to promote equity.
